elizabeth dole: republican incumbent

16 09 2008

hold the phone, liddy dole used to be a democrat………

so we will rename this blog the “transformation of elizabeth dole”

in 1966 dole lived in washington d.c. and worked on issues that affect the handicapped—–>

in 1968 dole became an independant. and worked for the nixon white house. nixon appointed her to a seven year term on the federal trade commission.———->

in 1975 dole became a republican.

good golly, whatta flip-flopper. which is great, because people should be allowed to change. flip-flopping gets such a bad rap, but at times, changing your position shows open-mindedness.

anyway, after dole worked for nixon, reagan, bush numero uno, she ran for the republican nomination in the 2000 election but finished after both bush el segundo and steve forbes (ha).

according to the new york times, the “political planets” were in alignment when dole won her seat in the senate in 2002. however, the political atmosphere of 2002 was drastically different than the scene today.

then:

  • southern states republican trend
  • high approval ratings for president bush — trickle down effect to benefit all republicans
  • from 1999-2001(ish) dole kept a ban on assault weapons, pushed for child-safety locks on guns, and supported a prohibition on armor-piercing bullets. she worried that these decisions made her ‘too liberal’ for the north carolina populous.
  • supported abortion in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger

now:

  • low approval ratings for president bush and the war in iraq (that began in 2002)
  • her positive image has been replaced by skepticism (as chairwoman of the national republican senatorial committee in 2006, democrats gained six seats and took control of the chamber)
  • dole now supports legislation that prohibits lawsuit against gun manufacturers, allowing her to receive an A and a 100% from theĀ  National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America, respectively.
  • dole received a 100% from the National Right to Life Committee, who oppose abortions even in cases of rape and incest.

so it appears that dole is willing to change her stance on issues such as abortion and gun control to win voters. we won’t judge, because isn’t that what you would do?

here’s the link to a little gem of a video, much akin to those made by michael scott in the dunder-mifflin office series, about elizabeth dole’s most recent opinion on the iraq war:
